As the holiday season approaches, concerns over online scams are rising. The UK's cyber security agency has reported that more than £11.5 million was lost to online criminals over the festive period last year. Shoppers are being urged to stay vigilant, especially with Black Friday around the corner. Scammers are using sophisticated methods such as deepfakes, phishing campaigns, fake discount sites, and AI-powered scams to exploit the shopping frenzy. Notably, the Chinese threat actor SilkSpecter has been identified as exploiting the Black Friday frenzy with a sophisticated phishing campaign using SEO poisoning and 4,700 spoofed storefronts. Retailers and cybersecurity experts are advising consumers to be cautious and take steps to protect themselves from falling victim to these scams.
