UK Insolvency Service Appoints Andrew Small, Former Police Investigator, as First Crypto Specialist to Recover Bitcoin and Digital Assets

The UK Insolvency Service has appointed Andrew Small, a former police investigator, as its first dedicated crypto intelligence specialist. In this newly created role, Small will focus on tracing and identifying digital assets such as Bitcoin in bankruptcy and criminal cases. This appointment reflects the UK government's efforts to enhance the recovery of online assets amid the evolving landscape of illicit finance and cryptocurrency-related fraud. The move aligns with broader law enforcement initiatives, including training programs by agencies like the FBI, which reported over $10 billion in digital assets lost to fraud in 2024. Experts in the field, such as Jeremy Sheridan, founder of the Secret Service's first digital asset investigative unit, have highlighted the importance of specialized expertise in combating crypto financial crime and recovering stolen funds.
