Britain marked the 77th anniversary of the National Health Service on 5 July, with senior political figures from across the spectrum issuing public messages of gratitude to NHS employees and volunteers. The Prime Minister’s office, Labour leader Keir Starmer and London Mayor Sadiq Khan were among those who praised the service’s doctors, nurses and support staff for their dedication since the NHS was founded in 1948. The Department of Health and Social Care used the occasion to underline progress on a forthcoming 10 Year Health Plan, saying nationwide consultations held over the past year would help make the publicly funded system “fit for the future.” Details of the strategy have not yet been released, but officials say the plan is intended to address staffing, capacity and funding pressures that have intensified since the pandemic.
