A wildfire broke out on Arthur’s Seat, the extinct volcano that dominates Edinburgh’s skyline, at about 4:05 p.m. local time on Sunday, according to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Flames spread quickly across the hillside in Holyrood Park, sending thick black smoke visible from miles away across the Scottish capital. Firefighters remained on site through the evening to contain the blaze, while police cordoned off roads and footpaths and urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area. Authorities said they had received numerous emergency calls but did not immediately report injuries or damage to property. The incident comes during Edinburgh’s peak tourist season, with the city hosting the International Festival and the Fringe. Arthur’s Seat, rising roughly 250 metres above sea level near the Scottish Parliament and the Royal Mile, is a popular destination for walkers seeking panoramic views of the city.
