Air quality alerts have been issued across much of the Great Lakes region, including Chicago, northwest Indiana, Michigan, and parts of Central Canada and Manitoba, due to wildfire smoke drifting in from Canada. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is monitoring the smoke using its GOES-19 satellite. The Chicago metropolitan area is under an air quality alert through Tuesday night because of unhealthy ozone levels combined with lingering effects of the Canadian wildfire smoke. Health officials in Michigan are urging residents to exercise caution amid the alert. Additionally, a hot and stagnant air mass has contributed to poor air quality in regions such as Las Vegas, where ozone levels and smoke from regional wildfires remain elevated.
