The National Weather Service offices in Chicago and Twin Cities have forecasted a series of scattered thunderstorms across northern Illinois, northwest Indiana, and parts of the Twin Cities area through mid-July 2025. These storms are expected to occur intermittently from the afternoons into the evenings, with the strongest events capable of producing damaging winds, hail, and localized flash flooding. Heat indices near 100°F are anticipated to contribute to the development of strong to severe thunderstorms, particularly on July 15 and 16. Additional thunderstorm chances are forecasted through the weekend, with heightened risk of heavy rain, wet microbursts, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, especially on Friday and Saturday. While severe weather is not expected at all times, gusty winds and brief downpours are possible with the strongest storms. The period will also see increased humidity and typical summertime heat, with a temporary cooling and reduced humidity on July 17 before rain chances and humidity return by the weekend. Strengthening winds on July 17 are expected to cause building waves and dangerous swimming conditions on Lake Michigan. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated on weather conditions due to the potential for hazardous weather impacts.

It'll be hot and humid today with peak afternoon heat indices nearing 100 degrees. That heat should fuel scattered strong to severe storms this afternoon and evening. Much cooler and less humid Thursday, but rain chances and humidity return by Saturday. #ilwx #inwx https://t.co/qnuxXZMhQU
