Newmont Corp. has suspended production at its Red Chris copper-gold mine in northwest British Columbia after an overnight accident left three miners trapped underground, Premier David Eby said on Wednesday. The workers—two from British Columbia and one from Ontario—are believed to be uninjured and sheltering in a designated refuge chamber. Newmont is coordinating with specialised provincial mine-rescue crews to reach the men, according to the premier. Red Chris, which began operations in 2015 and is 70-percent owned and operated by Newmont, is one of the U.S. miner’s two Canadian sites. Eby said he has briefed Ontario Premier Doug Ford and pledged provincial resources, calling the situation “deeply concerning” for the workers’ families and the broader mining community.
