A truck operated by logistics firm Fletes Durango and carrying some 33 tonnes of gold and silver concentrate belonging to Grupo Minero Bacis was hijacked by armed assailants on 4 July while travelling from the company’s facilities in Durango to the Pacific port of Manzanillo. According to the miner’s account, two white vehicles with tinted windows forced the convoy to stop on a stretch of road near Guadalajara, subdued the driver and two security guards for about an hour and a half, and fled with the cargo. The tractor-trailer was later recovered, but the concentrate remains missing. Grupo Minero Bacis estimates the stolen material could be worth close to US$300,000, or roughly six million pesos, owing to the high grade of the unrefined metals. The loss interrupts shipments from the El Herrero project, which produces concentrates for domestic processing and export. The company has temporarily halted similar transport operations while it reviews security protocols. President Claudia Sheinbaum said the federal security cabinet is coordinating the investigation, and Jalisco governor Pablo Lemus has asked the state prosecutor’s office to open its own case after noting an initial lack of local complaints. Bacis has indicated it will bring the matter before the federal attorney-general’s office. The incident adds to a rise in highway cargo thefts that has prompted industry groups to call for stronger protection of high-value shipments.
