Nissan Motor Co. is recalling roughly 481,000 vehicles in North America after regulators warned that defective bearings in its variable-compression turbo engines could cause the engine to lose power while driving, heightening crash risks. Filings with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show 443,899 vehicles are affected in the United States, with another 37,837 in Canada. The recall covers 2021–24 Nissan Rogues, 2019–20 Altimas, 2019–22 Infiniti QX50 crossovers and the 2022 Infiniti QX55, all equipped with either 1.5-liter three-cylinder or 2.0-liter four-cylinder VC-Turbo engines. Nissan and NHTSA said bearing failures can develop gradually, producing abnormal engine noise, rough running or warning lights before the engine stalls. Dealers will inspect the engine oil pan for metal debris and, if necessary, repair or replace the engine at no cost to owners. Notification letters are slated to go out on Aug. 25, and drivers can check their vehicle identification number on Nissan’s or NHTSA’s websites for more information.
