Ford Motor Co. is recalling 694,271 Bronco Sport and Escape sport-utility vehicles in the United States after a year-long investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that cracked fuel injectors could leak gasoline and spark engine-compartment fires. The action covers Bronco Sport models built from 2021 to 2024 and Escape models from 2020 to 2022 that use 1.5-litre engines supplied with injectors from Italy-based Dumarey Flowmotion Technologies. Ford said only about 0.3% of the vehicles are expected to have the defect. An interim software update will detect leaks, cut engine power and shut off fuel delivery, while the company develops a mechanical remedy. Ford estimates the campaign will cost roughly $570 million, which it will book in second-quarter results. The move supersedes smaller recalls issued in 2022 and 2024 that relied mainly on software fixes and a drain tube but did not replace suspect injectors. It brings Ford’s tally to about 90 safety campaigns so far in 2025, the most of any automaker this year, and sent the company’s shares down about 3% in afternoon trading on Wednesday.
