York Regional Police are urging residents of Nobleton, about 50 kilometres north of Toronto, to be vigilant after a coyote bit 12-year-old Rocco Morra outside his home shortly after noon on Sunday, 29 June. The animal clamped onto the boy’s left thigh while he was sitting on a curb near Highway 27 and King Road, leaving four puncture wounds. Morra was taken to hospital, treated for minor leg injuries, given antibiotics and the first in a series of rabies vaccinations, and later released. Police say there have been frequent coyote sightings in the area and are advising people not to approach, feed or photograph the animals. The Township of King has enlisted Vaughan Animal Services and the Toronto Wildlife Centre to develop a controlled response plan and has repeated guidance that anyone encountering a coyote should make noise, wave their arms and back away slowly without turning their back. No further injuries have been reported, but officers continue to patrol the neighbourhood and collect information on the animal’s movements.
