A mountain lion fitted with a tracking collar bit a four-year-old child on 20 July while the family was hiking near the Victoria Overlook area on Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park, Washington, according to a National Park Service statement. The attack was reported at approximately 3:15 p.m. and prompted an immediate response from park staff and Clallam County Fire District 2 paramedics. The child was airlifted by helicopter to a Level 1 trauma centre in Seattle. Local media later reported the child was in stable condition and had been discharged. Witnesses said the child’s father intervened, preventing more severe injuries. Rangers, assisted by a canine team, located the cougar later the same day and killed it the following morning. Authorities said the removal of the animal eliminated any ongoing threat to visitors.
