‘Probably the most disliked politician in the world:’ Doug Ford on how Canadians view Trump https://t.co/BzQxXpPblt
Ontario Premier Doug Ford sharply escalated his criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump, telling CNN that Trump is “probably the most disliked politician in the world in Canada” and accusing him of pursuing policies that “hurt the American people.” Ford’s remarks follow Washington’s decision last week to slap a 35 per cent tariff on Canadian goods that fall outside the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement. Ford said he has heard similar misgivings from U.S. governors and lawmakers, including Republicans who he claims are reluctant to speak publicly for fear of retaliation. He warned that Trump could attempt to reopen CUSMA as soon as November—two years ahead of the scheduled 2026 review—arguing that Ottawa and the provinces must prepare by onshoring key industries and being ready to respond with equivalent counter-measures. The premier delivered the comments a day after meeting Prime Minister Mark Carney and fellow provincial leaders to craft a united response to the new tariffs. While Ford continues to push for dollar-for-dollar retaliation, other premiers favour a more measured approach as they gauge the impact of the escalating trade dispute on jobs and investment on both sides of the border.
