Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko captured her first WTA Tour title on Thursday night, rallying past former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to win the National Bank Open in Montreal. Entering the WTA 1000 event as an 18-year-old wildcard ranked No. 85, Mboko converted eight of nine break points and overcame 13 double faults to secure the biggest victory of her young career. The triumph caps a two-week surge in which Mboko defeated four Grand Slam champions—Sofia Kenin, reigning Roland Garros winner Coco Gauff, Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and finally Osaka. The title is worth US$752,000, almost tripling her career prize money, and is expected to propel her from the mid-80s into the top 30, guaranteeing a seed at the US Open later this month. Mboko ended last season outside the top 300. Both Montreal finalists have withdrawn from this week’s Cincinnati Open: Mboko cited the right-wrist injury she aggravated in the Montreal semi-finals, while Osaka pointed to a scheduling change. Their absence opens four lucky-loser places in the final major tune-up before the year’s last Grand Slam.
