Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur, a former world No. 2 and three-time Grand Slam finalist, has announced an open-ended break from the sport. In a statement posted 17 July, the 30-year-old said she needs time to "breathe, heal and rediscover the joy of living" after two seasons marked by recurring injuries and emotional strain. Jabeur revealed she has been competing through shoulder and leg problems and no longer felt happy on court. Her difficulties were highlighted at Wimbledon last month, where she retired in the first round after struggling to breathe in extreme heat. She has also pulled out of next month’s Canadian Open in Montreal. The hiatus leaves Jabeur ranked No. 71, her lowest position since January 2020. A trail-blazer for Arab and African tennis, she owns five WTA titles, most recently in September 2023, but has not reached a tour final since. Jabeur did not set a timetable for her return, saying only that she will step back "for as long as it takes" to regain her health and enthusiasm.
