The 2025 GLOBL JAM under-23 basketball tournament opened in Toronto on Wednesday with the United States sweeping its first-day assignments in commanding fashion. Georgetown University, representing the U.S. men, overpowered Japan 88–53 at Mattamy Athletic Centre behind dominant interior play from seven-foot centre Julius Halaifonua and fellow big man Vince Iwuchukwu. Georgetown outscored Japan 52–14 in the paint and 21–5 on fast breaks, while guard DeShawn Harris-Smith nearly posted a triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. In the women’s bracket, the Texas Longhorns, standing in for the U.S. squad, rolled past Puerto Rico 85–45. The Longhorns never trailed, limiting Puerto Rico to 29 points through three quarters before easing to a 40-point margin. Host nation Canada also began its women’s campaign with a victory, while the Canadian men opened their schedule in the late game. The week-long tournament features national under-23 contingents playing under FIBA rules, with medal games set for 17 August.
