Actor and dancer Alyson Stoner on Tuesday published a memoir, “Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything,” detailing a series of abuses and health crises that followed their early success in films such as “Cheaper by the Dozen” and Disney’s “Camp Rock.” The book, released by St. Martin’s Press on 12 August, recounts stalking incidents, a struggle with an eating disorder that required inpatient treatment, and an attempted kidnapping scheme aimed at collecting ransom. The most serious new allegation in the memoir involves what Stoner describes as a rape by a prospective business partner encountered at a wellness event when the performer was 22. Stoner writes that the man—who is not identified—lured them to what purported to be a live-work studio, blocked the exit and assaulted them after they resisted his advances. Stoner, now 32 and using they/them pronouns, also reflects on professional disappointments, including losing the lead role in “Camp Rock” to Demi Lovato, and the toll that public scrutiny took on their mental health and finances. By sharing their experience, Stoner joins a growing number of former child actors publishing accounts of exploitation in the entertainment industry.
