Celebrity chef Michael Mina is partnering with Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry to open a new iteration of Mina’s Bourbon Steak restaurant and an adjacent 40-seat bourbon bar, The Eighth Rule, in San Francisco’s Union Square. The two venues will occupy space in the Westin St. Francis at 335 Powell Street and are slated to debut in October. Mina said the project will be “one of the most beautiful restaurants” he has ever built, while Curry—who has been expanding his Gentleman’s Cut whiskey line through his Thirty Ink business arm—called the venture a long-held dream. The combined operations are expected to employ about 150 people. The announcement adds momentum to a broader effort to revive Union Square’s retail and hospitality corridor, which has recently attracted new tenants such as Nintendo and Shoe Palace after several years of pandemic-related vacancies. City officials have welcomed the high-profile partnership as a sign that downtown San Francisco’s recovery is gaining traction.
