Chile, the largest exporter of copper to the United States, is awaiting official details following President Donald Trump's announcement of a potential 50% tariff on copper imports effective August 1. Chilean President Gabriel Boric and Mexican officials have expressed the need for clarity on whether copper cathodes will be included in the tariffs. Jorge Riesco, president of the National Mining Society (SONAMI), warned that such tariffs could have a severe impact on the global copper industry and potentially reduce Chile's mining GDP by $1.6 billion annually. Máximo Pacheco, chairman of Codelco, Chile's state-owned copper mining company, emphasized that the U.S. cannot quickly increase domestic copper production due to long project timelines and noted that the tariffs appear to target semi-manufactured copper rather than mining output. Pacheco also highlighted the importance of internal consensus in Chile to respond effectively and the need to explore alternative markets like India. Meanwhile, the Chilean government has reacted cautiously, with calls for further analysis and dialogue with U.S. authorities. Separately, the Chilean Supreme Court convened an emergency meeting following the irregular release of a hitman, prompting investigations and administrative actions involving the Ministry of Justice, the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the judiciary to prevent similar incidents. Security Minister Luis Cordero stated there is currently no justification to convene the National Security Council (Cosena) over this matter. Political figures, including Arturo Squella, president of the Republican Party, have criticized the judiciary's handling of the case and expressed concerns about crime and political divisions within the right-wing coalition. Additionally, investigations continue into alleged drug trafficking within the Chilean Air Force, with calls from officials for deep inquiries led by the Public Prosecutor's Office and for cases to be tried in civilian courts. These developments underscore ongoing challenges in Chile's security and political landscape amid economic uncertainties related to international trade tensions.
