The Chilean Prosecutor's Office has initiated an investigation into the role of the mayor of Curacaví, Mr. Hernández, following his involvement in the delivery of a suspect linked to the homicide of Michael Peñaloza. The investigation arises after the detention of individuals accused of the murder, with authorities examining whether the mayor's actions influenced the process. While some officials, including Cordero, have downplayed the mayor's involvement, noting that the arrests were already underway, the prosecutor's office is considering summoning the mayor for testimony. Separately, concerns have emerged regarding the Venezuelan criminal organization Tren de Aragua, which has been linked to illicit activities within the Santiago Uno prison in Chile. An attack on a Gendarmerie commander's residence in April exposed connections between the gang and certain prison officials, as well as the existence of "VIP cells" reserved for some Venezuelan inmates. Tren de Aragua, once a dominant force with satellite gangs across Venezuela, has seen its influence wane after losing its logistical hub in Tocorón prison, though it maintains a presence in Aragua and Bolívar states. The gang's operations and prison privileges continue to be under scrutiny by Chilean authorities.
