Chilean state-owned copper mining company Codelco confirmed the deaths of six miners following a collapse at its El Teniente underground mine triggered by a magnitude 4.2 seismic event. The collapse occurred last week, trapping the workers more than 900 meters underground. Rescue teams recovered the bodies of all six miners after several days of intensive search and rescue operations. The identities of the victims were progressively confirmed by regional prosecutors and the Medical Legal Service (SML). The tragedy has led to a three-day national mourning period decreed by Chilean President Gabriel Boric. Codelco's board president, Máximo Pacheco, described the event as one of the most painful moments in the company's recent history and announced an international audit to investigate the causes and safety measures related to the accident. Prosecutors are conducting a technical investigation, including examining whether the seismic event was induced by mining activities. The accident has temporarily halted operations at El Teniente, one of the world's largest copper mines. Local municipalities declared communal mourning, and memorial services have been held to honor the deceased miners.
