A wave of phishing scams, known as smishing, is targeting individuals across the United States and beyond with fraudulent text messages related to unpaid tolls. Scammers impersonate toll service providers like E-ZPass and SunPass, sending messages that claim recipients owe small amounts for toll violations and urge them to click on malicious links. Authorities, including the FBI and state transportation departments, have issued warnings about these scams, which aim to steal personal and financial information rather than collect actual payments. The fraudulent texts often use urgent language and mimic legitimate toll service domains, exploiting confusion around toll systems. The FBI has logged over 60,000 complaints related to these scams. The scams are linked to a large-scale cybercriminal network, with phishing kits and malicious URLs originating from China. Researchers have identified tens of thousands of domains associated with these scams, many hosted on servers owned by Chinese firms. The texts are often sent via email or messaging platforms, such as Telegram, to bypass traditional spam filters. Authorities advise recipients to avoid clicking on links, report suspicious messages, and verify toll payments directly through official websites. Victims who have shared personal information are urged to contact their banks and monitor their accounts for unauthorized activity. Suspicious texts can be reported by forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM).
