BMW Group said on Tuesday it has signed an agreement with Chinese autonomous-driving specialist Momenta to co-develop an advanced driver-assistance system designed specifically for China. The joint solution will operate on both highways and urban roads and will be installed across a range of locally built BMW models, the companies said in separate statements. The technology is slated to debut in domestically produced vehicles based on BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse electric-vehicle platform before being rolled out to additional line-ups. BMW said the project combines its two decades of safety engineering with Momenta’s artificial-intelligence ‘Flywheel’ training model to provide point-to-point navigation assistance under Chinese traffic conditions. The pact highlights the growing reliance of global carmakers on Chinese suppliers for smart-driving features. Mercedes-Benz has already selected Momenta for its own systems, while Volkswagen and Audi have struck similar deals with local partners XPeng and IM Motors for China-market vehicles. BMW is seeking to shore up its position in the world’s largest auto market, where its first-quarter deliveries fell 17% to 155,200 vehicles. Last year the company earmarked CNY20 billion (about USD2.8 billion) to upgrade its Shenyang production hub, which will manufacture the Neue Klasse models equipped with the new driver-assist technology.
