China’s top diplomats used separate public appearances on Friday to signal a stepped-up diplomatic outreach aimed at bolstering multilateralism and countering what Beijing calls unilateral pressure. Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Brazilian counterpart, Mauro Vieira, in a phone call that China wants to "strengthen coordination" with Brazil and the wider BRICS grouping to resist unilateralism and deepen practical cooperation, according to a foreign-ministry readout. At a press briefing in Beijing on preparations for next week’s Victory-Day commemorations, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu said the United Nations’ authority "can only be strengthened, not weakened," and reiterated Beijing’s push to build "a community with a shared future for humanity." Ma added that China seeks "mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation" with the United States but will "firmly safeguard" its core interests. Beijing’s latest messaging comes as it rallies support within BRICS and other multilateral forums while managing friction with Washington, including over the 145% U.S. tariff on Chinese goods that took effect in April. The comments also form part of China’s efforts to present itself as a champion of global governance reform ahead of the upcoming V-Day events.
