China has faced numerous food safety incidents over the past two decades, with the most recent scandal involving unsafe conditions at Wuhan's animal market. Despite the national strategy for food safety, these incidents have persisted. In response, two Chinese food agencies have released drafts of new food labeling requirements in July 2024 to address the issue. Industry experts emphasize the need for stricter national-level regulations and better public oversight to manage the country's extensive and complex food supply chain. Xi Jinping highlighted the importance of food safety in 2013, stating that it is a major test of the government's ability to govern.
"Whether we can give the people a satisfactory answer on food safety is a major test of our ability to govern. If the CCP cannot even ensure food safety, and cannot do so for a long time, people will question whether we are qualified." - Xi, Dec 2013. https://t.co/kwdZudcYHJ
