China’s State Council Information Office on Tuesday marked the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Xizang Autonomous Region with a briefing that underscored six decades of rapid economic and infrastructure gains. Regional gross domestic product reached 276.5 billion yuan (about US$38 billion) in 2024, a 155-fold rise from 1965 in constant prices, translating into an average annual growth rate of 8.9%, officials said. During the current 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), more than 400 billion yuan in major projects has already been executed, including accelerated work on the long-delayed Sichuan–Xizang railway. The region now operates 124,900 kilometres of highways, 1,359 kilometres of railways and 183 air routes, sharply improving connectivity across the Himalayan plateau. Authorities also highlighted rapid build-out of hydropower, wind and solar bases aimed at supporting China’s national carbon-peaking and neutrality goals.
