China's transportation system has shown robust growth in passenger trips across multiple modes, with the railway network leading the expansion. In 2024, China recorded 64.6 billion inter-regional passenger trips, a 5.4% increase year-on-year, distributed among railroads (4.3 billion trips), highways (59.3 billion trips), and civil airlines (730 million trips), according to the Ministry of Transport. The railway sector experienced a record 1.86 billion passenger trips in the first five months of 2025, marking a 7.3% year-on-year increase, with foreign passengers increasing by 29% to 7.665 million trips. The China State Railway Group reported an average of 11,243 trains running daily during this period, up 7.5% from the previous year. The summer travel rush from July 1 to August 31, 2025, is expected to handle 953 million railway passenger trips, a 5.8% rise year-on-year, with daily trips averaging 15.37 million and approximately 11,500 passenger trains running each day. By mid-July, the railway system had transported 2.18 billion passengers since the start of the summer peak, a 3.4% increase compared to the same period last year. For the first half of 2025, China's railways transported a record 2.24 billion passengers, up 6.7% year-on-year, including 9.15 million foreign passengers, a 30% increase. A single-day record of 23.119 million passenger trips was set on May 1, 2025. Additionally, during the summer peak from July 1 to mid-July, 303 million passenger trips were completed, a 3.8% increase from the previous year, with 922 additional daily passenger trains added.
