China’s smartphone market contracted further in June, with total handset shipments falling 9.3% from a year earlier to 22.6 million units, according to data released by the state-backed China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). Foreign brands, a category dominated by Apple, were hit harder than domestic manufacturers. Shipments of overseas-branded devices slid 31.3% to 1.97 million units, CAICT’s figures show, underscoring the intensifying competition local players such as Huawei and Xiaomi pose to imported models.
