China executed another sea-based orbital mission with the Smart Dragon 3 Y6 small-lift rocket, lifting off at 16:31 UTC on Aug. 8 (00:31 Beijing time on Aug. 9) from a mobile platform off the coast of Rizhao in Shandong Province. The solid-propellant launcher deployed 11 GeeSat Group 04 satellites, expanding the Geely-backed low-Earth-orbit constellation designed to provide vehicle-to-everything communications and high-precision positioning services. The flight marks the latest use of sea launch infrastructure that allows China to reduce risk to populated areas and increase launch flexibility.
