The 12th World Games commenced on August 7, 2025, at the Tianfu International Convention Center in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, featuring 3,942 athletes competing in 256 events across 34 sports. China has fielded its largest delegation to date with 489 members. The opening ceremony included a fireworks display symbolizing peace and friendship, drawing praise for its organization and hospitality. The Games showcase a variety of non-Olympic sports such as wushu, squash, roller skating, parkour, and dragon boat racing, with the latter making its debut as an official event. China has emerged as the leading nation on the medal table, securing multiple gold medals in disciplines including wushu sanda, squash, muaythai, freediving, and para ju-jitsu. Notable achievements include Lu Zhuoling winning the first gold for China in the wushu Taijiquan-Taijijian final, 18-year-old Liu Ziyi claiming China’s first squash victory, and para athlete Long Dengxi earning two golds in freediving. China also set a new finswimming relay world record. By the fourth day, China led with 18 golds, 6 silvers, and 2 bronzes, demonstrating strength across traditional and niche sports. The International World Games Association president, Jose Perurena, described the event as poised to become one of the best in history. The Games continue to attract international athletes and spectators, highlighting both competitive excellence and rich cultural experiences under the theme "Boundless Sports, Countless Wonders."
