China is planning to introduce nationwide subsidies to encourage couples to have more children amid ongoing population decline. The government intends to provide cash handouts of approximately 3,600 yuan (around USD 500) per child annually as a financial incentive. This move marks a significant policy shift from the previous one-child policy, which was lifted in 2016, but despite that, birth rates have halved over the past decade. The subsidy program aims to address demographic challenges including low birth rates and an aging population, which pose risks to the country’s economic growth and long-term development.
