During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), China has solidified its position as a major global trade partner, ranking among the top three trading partners for 157 countries and regions worldwide. The General Administration of Customs reported that China signed 519 cooperation documents and expanded its ports of entry by 40, reaching a total of 311. Despite global shifts towards renewable energy, China commissioned 21 gigawatts (GW) of new coal power capacity in the first half of 2025, the highest since 2016, with approvals for 25 GW of new coal projects during the same period. This surge in coal power occurs alongside record growth in renewable energy, with installed renewable power generation capacity rising from 40% to approximately 60% of the total energy mix. China has also established the world's largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system and built the largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, providing two charging piles for every five vehicles. Energy consumption during the first four years of the plan has reached 1.5 times the increase recorded in the previous plan (2016-2020). Chinese officials have emphasized efforts to upgrade customs supervision areas and enhance international customs cooperation to strengthen foreign trade resilience amid external uncertainties.
