China escalated its criticism of Ottawa’s trade policy, saying Canada’s new duties on Chinese steel imports breach World Trade Organization rules. The Ministry of Commerce in Beijing called the measures “unreasonable and illegal” and warned they would “seriously damage” normal bilateral trade. The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa added that Beijing could revise its unspecified countermeasures if Canada withdraws what it called discriminatory tariffs. In a separate notice, the embassy said the deadline for China’s antidumping probe into Canadian canola, originally expected by September, may be extended by as much as six months.
