A social-media account linked to China’s state broadcaster CCTV said Nvidia’s H20 artificial-intelligence chips are “neither environmentally friendly, nor advanced, nor safe,” warning that the devices may contain a hardware backdoor capable of remote shutdown. The post by the Yuyuan Tantian account urged Chinese buyers to avoid the product over national-security concerns. The criticism follows a 31 July meeting in which the Cyberspace Administration of China summoned Nvidia to explain whether its chips posed backdoor risks. People’s Daily, another state outlet, has also demanded “convincing security proofs” from the U.S. company. Nvidia has previously denied that its products allow unauthorized remote access and did not immediately comment on the latest allegations. H20 chips were developed for the Chinese market after Washington tightened export controls on advanced AI semiconductors in late 2023. The Trump administration barred their sale to China in April amid trade tensions but lifted the ban in July. The renewed scrutiny from Beijing clouds Nvidia’s prospects in a market that accounted for an estimated fifth of its data-center revenue before the export curbs.
Reuters reports Chinese state media claims Nvidia’s $NVDA H20 chips pose a security threat.
“H20 is far from a safe, eco-friendly, or advanced chip for China. When a chip is neither environmentally friendly nor advanced nor secure, as consumers, we certainly have the choice NOT to buy it,” argues social media account linked to Chinese state TV.
