In March 2024, the Chinese yuan reached a record high, accounting for 4.69% of global payments by value, marking its highest share since SWIFT established a new baseline in July. This increase from 4.0% the previous month underscores the yuan's growing role in international transactions, maintaining its rank as the 4th most active currency worldwide for 5 consecutive months. Concurrently, the yuan hit its weakest value against the dollar since November 2023, amid a strengthening U.S. dollar and diverging interest rates between China and the U.S. Additionally, short positions on the yuan have surged to their highest level since November 2023, reflecting increased market speculation against the currency.
