South Korean and Chinese stock markets advanced after the inauguration of President Lee Jae-myung in South Korea and supportive signals for technology sectors in China. On June 5, South Korea's KOSPI index closed at 2,812.05, up 1.49% for the day, its first close above 2,810 in approximately 11 months. The KOSPI started the session at 2,790.33, reached an intraday high of 2,831.11, and last closed above 2,810 on July 18, 2024. The KOSDAQ index also rose, closing at 756.23, with an intraday high of 758.72. Foreign investors were net buyers of 418.6 billion KRW, while institutional investors shifted to net buying of 116.1 billion KRW. Individual investors were net sellers of 519.2 billion KRW. Investor confidence in South Korea is linked to expectations that President Lee will implement expansionary fiscal policies to stimulate domestic demand, including a potential supplementary budget in July. Analysts forecast that the KOSPI could reach 2,900 by year-end, driven by anticipated capital market reforms under the new administration. In China, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.23% to 3,384.09, the Shenzhen Component Index gained 0.87%, and the ChiNext Index increased 1.11%. The Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong advanced 1.07%. Technology shares in Hong Kong rose 1.9%, and onshore Chinese technology stocks gained 2.3%. The CSI Internet Finance Index jumped 2.3% following new stablecoin regulations in Hong Kong. Chinese equities were buoyed by a speech from a senior official of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) affirming strong support for the science and technology sector, as well as regulatory measures encouraging AI and fintech development. The renminbi closed at 7.17 per US dollar, its strongest level in seven months, supporting equity inflows.
