OpenAI has disclosed that it has disrupted multiple covert influence operations and cyber threat campaigns originating from Chinese groups using its AI tools. These operations, although mostly small-scale and narrowly targeted, involved the use of OpenAI's models to generate social media content for secret influence activities. In one instance, OpenAI banned accounts linked to these efforts, including a user who claimed affiliation with a Chinese propaganda department, a claim OpenAI could not independently verify. Overall, OpenAI reported having disrupted at least 10 malicious AI-driven campaigns so far in 2025. The company is also actively promoting AI adoption in higher education by selling premium AI services to universities to facilitate faculty and student use. Meanwhile, concerns have been raised internally about OpenAI's shift from its original nonprofit mission toward a more commercial focus aimed at accelerating AI development.
