PwC's China unit is facing a six-month business ban imposed by Chinese authorities due to its audit of the collapsed property developer Evergrande. The ban, expected to start as early as September, is part of the punishment for PwC's role in auditing Evergrande, which has been accused of inflating its mainland revenues by nearly $80 billion. In addition to the ban, PwC is also expected to face a hefty fine of 500 million yuan ($70 million). The ban will restrict PwC from signing off on financial results, initial public offerings, and conducting other regulated activities in China. This move marks one of the toughest penalties ever imposed on a Big Four accounting firm in China, reflecting increased scrutiny by Beijing on foreign auditors.
