Shanghai has relocated more than 280,000 residents since Tuesday night as Tropical Storm Co-May moves up China’s east coast, state broadcaster CCTV reported. City authorities have ordered evacuations from low-lying districts and seaside resorts and opened temporary shelters across the financial hub. Co-May, the eighth named storm of the season, first came ashore in the early hours of Wednesday in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, with maximum sustained winds of about 23 metres per second (83 kph). Forecasters expect the system to skirt or make a second landfall near Shanghai later in the day, bringing torrential rain and the risk of flash flooding. As a precaution, Shanghai and neighbouring cities have cancelled flights and long-distance trains, suspended classes, and closed some coastal tourist sites. The measures remain in place even after China’s Tsunami Warning Centre lifted a separate yellow alert issued earlier on Wednesday following an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.
