Senior White House officials met with telecommunications executives to address a significant cyber espionage campaign by Chinese hackers targeting U.S. telecommunications networks. The breach, described as the worst hack in U.S. history, reportedly compromised the communications of around 150 politicians, including phone calls and text messages. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that the severity of the attack prompted President Joe Biden to raise the issue directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting in Peru. The hacking group, referred to as 'Salt Typhoon' and affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party, has been linked to these attacks, which have infiltrated critical infrastructure IT networks. Experts warn that the hackers may use their access to impersonate individuals or disrupt operations. The breach could necessitate the replacement of thousands of switches and routers in affected systems. U.S. officials, including the NSA, have urged the telecommunications industry to disclose details of the hacks to aid in mitigating the threat.
