Chinese President Xi Jinping, in his capacity as general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, visited Yangquan in north China’s Shanxi Province on 7 July to pay homage to soldiers killed during the Hundred-Regiment Campaign, a pivotal 1940 battle in China’s war of resistance against Japanese aggression. At the monument square dedicated to the campaign, Xi laid a floral basket before touring the adjoining memorial hall, where he reviewed historical exhibits recounting the Communist Party’s leadership of local troops and civilians against Japanese forces. Local officials briefed him on efforts to preserve revolutionary history and promote the campaign’s legacy.
