Chinese President Xi Jinping has instructed government agencies to incorporate public feedback collected during an online consultation into the drafting of the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan, which will steer economic and social policy from 2026 to 2030. The month-long campaign, held from 20 May to 20 June, attracted more than 3.11 million submissions, according to Xinhua. Xi said the breadth of participation illustrated China’s push for what he described as “whole-process people’s democracy,” and urged Party committees and all levels of government to study the ideas in detail and address citizens’ aspirations for a better life. Five-year plans, introduced in the 1950s, set medium-term targets across sectors ranging from industrial upgrading to social welfare. The forthcoming blueprint will be China’s first to encompass the second half of the decade and is expected to outline priorities for sustaining growth amid demographic pressure, technological competition and the transition to a greener economy.
