Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered full search-and-rescue operations after torrential rain triggered mountain torrents in Yuzhong County, part of Lanzhou in northwest China’s Gansu Province. Local authorities said 10 people were confirmed dead and 33 remained missing as of 3:30 p.m. Friday. Rainfall that began late Thursday reached a peak of 220.2 millimeters, inundating roads with mud more than 30 centimeters deep and wrecking vehicles and homes. Gansu has deployed more than 2,700 rescue workers, 980 vehicles and equipment, and 8,530 sets of emergency supplies, with efforts focused on locating the missing, restoring infrastructure and relocating residents. Beijing has released 430 million yuan (about US$60 million) from the central natural-disaster relief fund to support flood and geological-disaster response across affected regions. Separately, in southern Guangdong Province, rescuers in Guangzhou’s Baiyun district located the last of 14 people trapped by a rain-induced mountain collapse after a two-day search.
