Colombia is facing a political and diplomatic crisis following revelations that former Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva sought support from individuals close to former U.S. President Donald Trump to remove President Gustavo Petro from office. Spanish newspaper El País obtained secret audio recordings and testimonies indicating Leyva's attempts to orchestrate an international pressure campaign to oust Petro and install Vice President Francia Márquez as his replacement. The Colombian government condemned the alleged plot, with President Petro labeling it an act of revenge and demanding that Leyva and Márquez provide public and judicial explanations. In response to the controversy, Colombia's Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation into the matter. Subsequently, Petro filed a criminal complaint against Leyva for conspiracy, treason, defamation, and incitement to commit crimes. Amid the turmoil, Colombia's Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia, a close ally of Petro, resigned citing disagreements with recent government decisions, particularly related to a passport issuance contract. The diplomatic fallout extended to the United States, which called its chargé d'affaires in Colombia, John T. McNamara, for urgent consultations. In a reciprocal move, Petro recalled Colombia's ambassador to the U.S., Daniel García-Peña. After a brief stay in Colombia, García-Peña returned to Washington. The escalating tensions between Colombia and the U.S. underscore the strain in bilateral relations amid allegations of a coup attempt and internal political discord.
