Colombian senator and conservative presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay died early Monday at the age of 39, the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá hospital and his wife confirmed. Uribe, a leading figure in the opposition Centro Democrático party, had been in intensive care since he was shot during a campaign rally in Bogotá on 7 June. The candidate was struck by three bullets—two to the head and one to the leg—and underwent multiple surgeries. His condition, stable for several weeks, worsened on 9 August when doctors reported a fresh cerebral hemorrhage that required emergency neurosurgery. He remained in critical care until his death on 11 August. Police arrested a 15-year-old suspect at the scene of the shooting and have since detained at least five additional individuals, but investigators have yet to identify those who ordered the attack. The assassination has revived fears of political violence ahead of Colombia’s 2026 presidential election and leaves the right-leaning Centro Democrático scrambling to fill a vacancy at the top of its ticket.
