Colombian senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay died early Monday in Bogotá after spending more than two months in intensive care for wounds sustained in a campaign-rally shooting, the Fundación Santa Fe hospital and his wife, María Claudia Tarazona, confirmed. He was 39. Uribe was addressing supporters in the Fontibón district of the capital on 7 June when a gunman opened fire, striking him twice in the head and once in the leg. A 15-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene, and prosecutors have since charged at least five other adults accused of helping plan or carry out the attack. Doctors performed multiple neurosurgical procedures and kept the conservative lawmaker on life support, yet his condition never stabilized. The hospital reported a fresh cerebral hemorrhage over the weekend that returned him to “critical” status; he was pronounced dead at 1:56 a.m. Monday. Uribe, a leading figure in the right-wing Centro Democrático and a vocal critic of President Gustavo Petro, had been positioning himself for the May 2026 presidential election. His death revives memories of the political assassinations that troubled Colombia in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Authorities say the investigation continues into who ordered the attack and why. Political leaders across the spectrum—including former presidents Álvaro Uribe Vélez and Iván Duque as well as Vice-President Francia Márquez—condemned the killing and called for stronger measures to protect candidates ahead of next year’s campaign.
