Venezuela has released a group of 13 political prisoners, including opposition figures Américo De Grazia and Pedro Guanipa, amid increasing pressure from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump on Nicolás Maduro's socialist regime. Some of the detainees were fully freed, while others were placed under house arrest. This move comes as part of the broader tensions between the Trump administration and the Venezuelan government. Separately, in Colombia, 34 soldiers were kidnapped in the Guaviare department following a military operation against FARC dissidents led by Néstor Gregorio Vera, alias “Iván Mordisco.” The operation resulted in the deaths of 11 rebels, including a commander known as Dumar. The Colombian government confirmed the abduction and has been negotiating for the release of the soldiers. Subsequently, 33 of the kidnapped soldiers were released. Additionally, Venezuela freed five Colombian nationals detained near the border since August 14, including four signatories of the FARC peace agreement and a member of the National Reintegration Agency. Meanwhile, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has called for the release of political prisoners such as Perkins Rocha and Biagio Pilieri, marking the anniversary of their detentions and emphasizing a push for democratic transition in Venezuela.
