India crushed England by 336 runs at Edgbaston on Sunday, claiming their first Test victory at the Birmingham venue and levelling the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at 1-1. Chasing an improbable 608, England were bowled out for 271 shortly after tea on the fifth day. The result propelled India to fourth in the World Test Championship table and ended a winless run at a ground where Asian teams had never previously prevailed. Captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a record-breaking 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second, becoming the first player to compile both a double-century and a 150-plus score in the same Test. The 25-year-old’s 430-run match haul is the highest by an Indian in a single Test and made him the youngest India skipper to secure an overseas Test win. Fast-bowler Akash Deep delivered match-winning figures of 10 for 187, including 6 for 65 in the final innings, to register only the second 10-wicket haul by an Indian in a Test in England. Mohammed Siraj’s 6 for 99 had earlier limited the hosts to 407 in their first reply to India’s 587. Play now shifts to Lord’s, where the third Test begins on 10 July with the momentum firmly behind Gill’s side.
