In response to the bribery charges against Senator Bob Menendez, a bipartisan group of House members, including Representatives Angie Craig, Nancy Mace, Eric Sorensen, and co-sponsor Andy Kim, have introduced the Gifts for Officials, Legislators, and Delegates (GOLD) Standard Act. The legislation aims to close loopholes in existing bribery laws, sparked by allegations that Menendez accepted bribes in the form of gold bars. The bill seeks to expand federal bribery law and ensure public officials are held accountable for abusing their office privileges. This move has been prompted by the need for stronger ethics laws for public officials, as highlighted by the charges against Menendez, which include accepting gifts and cash in exchange for official acts. The federal court has also rejected Menendez's constitutional challenge to his indictment on charges of bribery and acting as a foreign agent on behalf of Egypt.
Even on St. Patrick's Day, lawmakers shouldn't be able to use their access to privileged information to chase pots of gold. 🌈 My bipartisan TRUST in Congress Act would ban Members of Congress from trading individual stocks — and from testing their luck 🍀 on the stock exchange.
Bipartisan members in the House are pushing legislation to strengthen federal bribery laws in the wake of the legal troubles facing Sen. Robert Menendez. https://t.co/1Dj9SbJxSG https://t.co/skEy2QDEaD
.@TomFitton: Senate ethics rules require you to avoid the appearance of benefitting your spouse. That is what seems to be happening with Sen. Whitehouse who has been falsely alleging conflicts of interest by conservative Supreme Court justices. READ: https://t.co/JnCMLVGmpH https://t.co/jx8mFtZDDu
