Twenty-five people were shot in Chicago between Friday afternoon and early Monday, leaving three of them dead, according to preliminary figures released by the Chicago Police Department. The toll is seven fewer victims than the same weekend last year and the lowest for the mid-August period since at least 2015, police data show. The dead include 31-year-old Gabriela Ochoa, who was gunned down around 8:40 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of West 27th Street in Bridgeport. Investigators say Ochoa, a licensed gun owner, was accompanying her teenage nephew to an online marketplace sale when a passenger in a dark sedan announced a robbery and opened fire. Ochoa’s firearm jammed when she tried to defend herself, and she was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital less than half an hour later. No arrests have been reported. Early Sunday, a 29-year-old man was shot and killed while sitting in a parked car on the 5800 block of North Mozart Street in West Ridge. In a separate incident outside the city limits, a teenage boy was fatally shot in suburban Cook County; police said a suspect was quickly taken into custody. The weekend violence also included a mass shooting that wounded four men on West Jackson Boulevard and two other multi-victim attacks on the South and Near West sides. Detectives from multiple districts are investigating, and police urged anyone with information to come forward.
